Newberg is located 25miles southwest of Portland in the heart of wine country. It is a college town and therefore has everything a city could possibly need, but with a small town feel. The houses and shops are cute and quaint in the downtown district and with a growing population of just over 22k, new developments are making this a great place to settle down.
SCHOOLING & EDUCATION
In 1888 Newberg became a college town with the addition of a Quaker founded University, now named George Fox University. Home of the Bruins, the school remains a Christian private school but has become the second largest private university in the state of Oregon and ranks in the top 50 best schools in the country.
Newberg also serves the Newberg School District, which includes 6 primary schools, 2 middle schools, 2 private Christian schools and the choice of either Newberg High School or Catalyst Alternative High School.
GEOGRAPHY & CLIMATE
Although Newberg is a city there is no shortage of wide open spaces. The majority of the town is made up of farms, ranging from Berry, to Lavender to Llama. With an average of only 176 in elevation it’s seasons remain quite mild making it the perfect condition for grapes.
TRANSPORT & TRANSIT
Due to Newberg’s small town nature there are really only a few highways, the rest are all country roads. 99W is the major north and south route connecting Portland to Newberg and the smaller community of Dundee to the larger city of McMinnville. OR47 takes you from east to west to the small communities of Yamhill and Gaston all the way west to Banks. And OR219 will bring you south to Woodburn or north to Hillsboro. No matter the direction the drives are beautifully scenic.
THINGS TO DO
The 99W Drive-In is THE go to spot for family traditions. In the summer the Drive-In serves up double features and always plays the national anthem to kick off the start of every night. If that doesn’t say American country I don’t know what does. People from all across the Willamette Valley come to take part in this little slice of Americana.
There are also many attractions for adults, being located right in the heart of wine country. There are a number of wineries and breweries to choose from and even the ever popular Allison Inn and Spa can fill your cup up. The Allison, as it’s often called, is a 4 star resort on 35 acres of vineyards offering wellness treatments, yoga classes and fine dining. It is a hidden gem of Newberg.
